Coping skills classes
Virtual group appointments to better cope with life's challenges.
Established Kinwell patients can access our behavioral health services, including group appointments that teach coping skills for challenging life events, mental health concerns, and relationship issues.
Better ways to manage emotions
Join a group of like-minded people who are eager to improve their coping skills and build emotional resilience. These group sessions are designed to share strength, inspiration, and support. Patients will learn evidence-based skills to manage difficult emotions and stressful situations. Each class will cover a different topic and skill, engage participants in discussion, and practice the skills during class. Choose the class or classes that interest you most.
All classes will be held on Mondays from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Who can attend?
These classes are open to any patient, age 18 and older, who has established their primary care service with a Kinwell clinician. Patients can attend from anywhere within Washington state. Co-pays and fees for these medical appointments will apply based on your medical plan. To learn more about the costs involved, see the FAQ below.

Upcoming coping skills classes:
Vulnerability Factors
This class focuses on our vulnerability factors – the events, circumstances, and lifestyles that make us more susceptible to distress. We will discuss areas of life including sleep, diet, and exercise, and just how profoundly they impact our mental health.
Motivation
Oftentimes, we know what we need to do to feel better, but a lack of motivation stands in our way. This class explores the vicious cycle of feeling bad and doing less and details how to build the motivation to do more and feel better.
Check the Facts
How we interpret a situation can have a big impact on how we respond to it. In this class, patients will learn how to evaluate their assumptions and redirect their judgments with a skill called “check the facts.”
Emotional Regulation
It’s important to recognize when we are in the throes of an emotion—sadness, anxiety, anger —and to cope effectively in the moment. This class will teach patients the STOP skill and the TIP skill to reduce rumination and the fight or flight response.
Problem Solving
Sometimes managing our emotions doesn’t depend on changing how we think, but on changing what we do with some good old-fashioned problem solving. This class will teach participants a system for identifying problems and putting solutions into action.
Mindfulness
When a person avoids emotions, they may intensify in the background until they pop out unexpectedly. One key to strong mental health is the ability to feel our feelings. In this class, patients will learn to approach emotions with mindfulness.
Healthy Distraction
Sometimes intense emotions stick around longer than they should. In this class, you will learn how to get unstuck from ruminating thoughts and long-lasting emotions with the use of healthy distraction.
Radical Acceptance
Difficult emotions, thoughts, and situations can be hard to accept. Without acceptance, however, it’s hard to move beyond distress and manage difficult experiences effectively. This class will explore a powerful skill and mindset known as Radical Acceptance. You will learn how to look at challenges with more perspective and experience less distress as a result.
Self-compassion
Many of us have an inner critic. When we speak to ourselves harshly and with judgment, distress tends to last longer, emotions are more intense, and we are less likely to reach our goals. This class will explore the concept of self-compassion and offer participants tangible ways to incorporate this skill into their everyday lives.
Gratitude
This class explores the powerful skill of gratitude: showing appreciation for the good in one’s life. We will discuss how to apply this skill regularly as a way to boost mood, increase optimism, and enhance resilience.
